We made a group assignment on the theory of the DMIS model and did a presentation about this assignment.

DMIS model (paper)

An individual assignment was to write a paper about the DMIS model and reflect this model on our own experiences. I picked an example of my current situation within my soccer club. I found it very interesting to apply this theory on my own situation(s). Really thinking about this, you can also improve your situation more easily in my opinion. When I went to Copenhagen I also thought about the model and reflected on it during the week. The hard thing here was that I not only had to deal with one or two cultures but with many more. We were put into groups with a variety of 8 cultures (including dutch). Everyones behavior and approaches in situations are very different from each other and that was I think the most hard to handle. Nevertheless I learned a lot from all different cultures and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world!

Tool for Berlin

We created a tool for our trip to Berlin. The goal of this tool is to get to know each others cultures. We started brainstorming to create a tool. The main thing we thought about was ‘How do people get to know each other very quickly?’. We eventually came up with the concept of speed dating.

  • Share some religious practices or beliefs in your country?

Tool testing

Testing in Prague

During the trip to Berlin we were supposed to test the “Taco about it” tool. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to do that. Although some of our group members managed to test the tool in Prague.

“Taco about it” was tested in a bar by two people that weren’t acquainted before. Some of the questions in the tool are very personal (Ex. What is your family concept?; What are you most proud of?; What is the one thing about yourself that you would like me to know?). In this concrete situation, those questions were beneficial and helped people to get to know each other better in a short period of time.

To get more accurate data and diverse feedback we tested the tool one more time but with a bigger audience. In the second test we asked international students from English stream to participate in the experiment. To get more insights we asked the participant to answer the questions that will help us understand if the tool actually helps people with different cultures to connect.

The outcomes were interesting. Most of the participants said that there was not much communication because the rounds were too short. The most common question that was skipped was: What’s the one thing you would like to change about yourself today and why? Students found this question intimidating and were not willing to answer it. The general idea of the app is not new, although most students found the whole experience to be fun. They also mentioned that to fully enjoy the process people should be in a good mood and to have a nice vibe. Most of the participants would recommend using “Taco about it” at a party as an ice breaker where people don’t know each other.

Second group assignment

The second group assignment was a presentation about the communication accommodation theory. We sat together and everybody explained their own part to the others and with all information we could come up with various examples about this theory.

Within the first group assignment and the paper I wrote, I could reflect a lot on my own cultural baggage. Applying the DMIS model on my own situation really helped me with that. Because of this model I could really think about my own cultural baggage in a structured and easy understandable way.

Reflect on professional practice in different intercultural models

Because my future job is probably going to be in the IT business, it is very important to not only know about different cultures but to really understand where they are coming from and try to understand how they might communicate differently than my own culture. In this business you have to deal with people with different backgrounds and it would make everything easier if everybody is open to other ways of communicating.

Have a vision on working in intercultural groups

In this semester I worked in intercultural groups twice. In the Fontys minor DXD I worked with two different cultures. I would split them into Western European and Eastern European. There were some very interesting differences but we also had a lot in common. In Copenhagen I also worked in a intercultural group that consisted of eight different cultures. This was a totally different experience than the minor itself. It’s really overwhelming being surrounded with that many different cultures. I learned a lot during this week!
